Gentay Communications developed a mobile Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) app called nanu in 2014. It was built to function in low bandwidth 2G and congested networks and enable quality calls to and from emerging markets, for free.
In a span of 2 years, it acquired more than 6.5 million users worldwide and an average of 35,000 users on a daily basis. It’s daily active usage and monthly active usage rates were 18% and 43% respectively.
The success of the app was largely due to Gentay Communication’s proprietary Gentay Compression System, which enabled the app to consume up to 80% less bandwidth than competitor apps and thus deliver better quality calls, with a minimal call drop rate.
Hike commissioned Gentay Communications to develop a best-in-class video call app. In a period of 2 months, we developed a product that used up to 50% less bandwidth than conventional video call apps and delivered superior quality than these apps.
